Fitna of Social Media
Introduction
Let us be very honest: social media is not something we are using for just the fun anymore! It has become integral to our lives. Almost automatic.
You wake… look at your phone. You feel bored… you scroll. Before sleeping… again repeat the same.
"Social media fitna is quiet. It doesn't pull you up with a warning. It comes quietly. And that’s why it’s dangerous."
Social Media Is Not The Devil… But Neither Is It Neutral
Twitter, Instagram, or YouTube are not inherently evil. They are platforms. You can learn, watch reminders, and gain knowledge. But that’s the ideal use. Reality is different.
None of us go to social media with the intent to learn. We open it to pass time. To escape boredom. To feel something. And what do we see? Endless videos, random content, and trends that don’t sit right, but we still watch.
It Begins at the Eyes
Consider a normal instance: a man looking at reels. Suddenly, inappropriate content pops up. He pauses for a second... then continues. In his mind, he justifies: “I’m not doing anything wrong. I’m just watching.”
But what we see affects us from the inside. First time, it feels uncomfortable. Second time, less so. Then slowly… it feels normal. When wrong-feeling transitions into habit, that is a phenomenal collapse of the heart.
Modesty (Haya) Is a Process
Haya does not poof away in one night. It fades slowly. Today, people share every moment, every angle, every detail for validation and likes. Clothes change, behavior changes, and thinking changes.
For the Muslim, life is not just about "my life, my rules." There are boundaries. Modesty is not restriction; it’s protection.
The Most Terrifying: Never Knowing Right from Wrong
The biggest problem is when we stop feeling bad. If we watched something wrong before, we felt guilt. Now? Everyone is doing it, so it feels normal. When there is no resistance from within, there is no push to stop.
Faith Does Not Shatter… It Crumbles
Faith weakens slowly. You delay prayers, then rush them, then skip them. You tell yourself, “I’ll fix it later.” Social media doesn't tell you to leave your faith; it just fills your mind until there is no room left for Allah.
So What Can We Do?
- Clean Your Feed: Delete accounts that pull you away from Deen.
- Limit Your Time: Don't let hours disappear into the void.
- Skip, Don't Scroll: If something wrong appears, skip it immediately.
- Follow Beneficial Content: Balance your feed with knowledge.
A Thought That Hits Hard
Imagine if your mobile shows everything you did on the Day of Judgment? Every video, every message, every late-night scroll. Would you be comfortable watching it? Nothing is truly covered.
